Minutes of A.M.A.P.S. Meeting

November 16, 2005

The Meeting was held at Russo’s on the Bay and was hosted by Thompson Learning.

Danny Jaye opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and thanking Art Weis and Kara Bombelli from Thompson Learning for hosting the meeting.  Danny reminded members that Arthur Forster is collecting annual dues. He also requested that anyone who hasn’t done so, contact Susan Sladowski to update your contact information. Otherwise, our directory will not be accurate.

All Math APs are encouraged to vote on the implementation schedule for the New Regents examinations on the state website.

Steve Balasiano reminded people about the ATMNYC meeting that is being held on Saturday November 19th at Hunter College (8 AM).

Jack Cohen spoke about and applications were given out for the NYC Math project.  People were encouraged to join.

Dawn and John spoke about Math for America (MfA)).  They are currently training teaching fellows for three regions.  They also discussed the master teacher program and encouraged AP’s to recommend teachers whom they feel might be qualified.

Paul Cinco spoke about the NYU-Urban Master Teacher program.  They are looking for two people who can work full time.  The program is sponsored by a grant from Washington D.C.   The program involves supervising student teachers.

A moment of silence was observed for a former Math AP, Abe Kadish, who passed away last summer.

John Wolfe talked about the NYS Math honor society, and distributed pamphlets, which outlines the criteria for admission.  So far, the only NYC member is James Madison High School.  One possibility for an advisor could be the Math Team coach.

The representatives from Thompson learning discussed the various textbooks that are available for purchase, and talked about the software (ILRN) that comes free with the textbook.  The software is useful for creating review material, tests and keeping track of student data.  Danny Jaye suggested that their Algebra II book can be used to prepare students for calculus without a pre-calculus course.

John Mazzola gave a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation on the uses of HSST.   He answered questions regarding its functionality and encouraged people to log on to the website and start using it.  The website can only be accessed from a school computer.  Your username and password are the same as your Outlook account.

Respectfully Submitted,

John Wolfe
