Minutes of the December 5, 2002 AMAPS meeting:

1.      Sharon Hoosak welcomed those present and introduced Joni Selman, our Prentice Hall host. Joni described the items and samples provided to each member.

2.      Committee coordinators met with their committee members to make preliminary plans before the Christmas break. The curriculum committee coordinators reported the following plans:

·        Pre-Calculus will work via e-mail

·        Math A will hold its first meeting on January 21 at W.C. Bryant HS

·        Math B will hold its first meeting on December 12 at Bayside HS

3.      Joni Selman introduced the guest speaker, Martin Lewinter. He is professor of Mathematics at SUNY, Purchase, and author of “The Saga of Mathematics” published by Prentice Hall. Each AMAPS member received a copy of his book. The topic of his informative and amusing lecture was “Here’s looking at Euclid”.

4.      Two members of the Staff Development committee made presentations. Mary Burke spoke on the issue of literacy in a mathematical context. She distributed sample worksheets to illustrate several strategies. Jack Pitula shared information gleaned at the recent NYSTM conference at the Nevele Hotel.

5.      Sharon Hoosak reported that the Mathematics A Component Re-Test dates have been set for early May. As was the case last year each component contains two modules and will be administered over two days.

6.      Steve Arnofsky provided an updated list of topics for the Math A Regents Exam. This most recent list clarifies the scope of the exam.

7.      Sharon Hoosak distributed a Math B Rubric Album from the NYSED, similar to the Math A document Steve Arnofsky distributed at the November meeting.

The meeting was adjourned early due to the weather.
