Minutes
of the December 5, 2002 AMAPS meeting:
1.
Sharon Hoosak welcomed those present
and introduced Joni Selman, our Prentice Hall host. Joni described the items
and samples provided to each member.
2.
Committee coordinators met with their
committee members to make preliminary plans before the Christmas break. The
curriculum committee coordinators reported the following plans:

Pre-Calculus will work via e-mail
·
Math A will hold its first meeting on January 21
at W.C. Bryant HS
·
Math B will hold its first meeting on December
12 at Bayside HS

Joni Selman introduced the guest
speaker, Martin Lewinter. He is professor of Mathematics at SUNY, Purchase, and
author of “The Saga of Mathematics” published by Prentice Hall. Each AMAPS
member received a copy of his book. The topic of his informative and amusing
lecture was “Here’s looking at Euclid”.
4.
Two members of the Staff Development
committee made presentations. Mary Burke spoke on the issue of literacy in a
mathematical context. She distributed sample worksheets to illustrate several
strategies. Jack Pitula shared information gleaned at the recent NYSTM
conference at the Nevele Hotel.
5.
Sharon Hoosak reported that the
Mathematics A Component Re-Test dates have been set for early May. As was the
case last year each component contains two modules and will be administered
over two days.
6.
Steve Arnofsky provided an updated
list of topics for the Math A Regents Exam. This most recent list clarifies the
scope of the exam.
7.
Sharon Hoosak distributed a Math B
Rubric Album from the NYSED, similar to the Math A document Steve Arnofsky
distributed at the November meeting.
The meeting was adjourned early due to the
weather.
